Description

Kalaima is the debut album by the jazz trio led by Filippo Orefice, together with Fabrizio Puglisi on piano and Marco D’Orlando on drums.

It’s a relatively unusual combo given the absence of the bass, even though there are eminent predecessors of this. Lester Young with his legendary trio featuring Nat King Cole and Buddy Rich was in fact the direct source of inspiration for the establishment of the trio four years ago when Orefice, Puglisi, and D’Orlando started to play as a trio.

The album Kalaima is focused on original music often combined with free-form solos and/or thematic improvisation, as well as more structured forms or classics like Criss Cross by Thelonious Monk.

6 tracks out of 12 are signed by the leader, 4 are equally shared by Puglisi and D’Orlando, one is by Monk and one is a collective improvisation. This geometrical equilibrium in the authorship of the tracks is representative of the warm but balanced musical environment created by Orefice in the album, where you will find expressed three of the most exciting voices of the contemporary Italian jazz scene.
