Description
Felsenmeer is a quartet founded by clarinetist Joséphine Besançon, together with Charles Paillet on electric guitar, Fanny Bouteiller on double bass, and Matheo Ciesla on drums. The group’s musical language draws on Besançon’s background across classical, contemporary and jazz music, shaping a repertoire in which carefully crafted composition and collective improvisation are closely intertwined.
The name Felsenmeer, literally “sea of rocks,” refers to a geological formation of chaotic reliefs — and that image runs through the quartet’s debut release. Reliefs traces steep ascents and sudden drops, ground that shifts underfoot, openings carved by wind, moments of pure suspension before the fall. Music that unfolds like a path through unfamiliar terrain: disorienting, airy, and alive to every change of contour.
