Description

This work, the result of a fifteen-year collaboration and friendship, tells a story of refuge and the search for a new beginning. Through electronics, fragments of folk songs, nursery rhymes and bell melodies, the two musicians transform this quest into a living sound world, poised between melodic form and timbral research.

The compositions arise from a reworking of folk materials: fragments of songs, melodic lines and rhythmic cells resurface as distant traces, alongside original themes rhythmically inspired by folk traditions. The music alternates between binary and ternary metres, the latter being a characteristic feature of Lombard folk music.
A central element of the work is the use of cyclical harmonic cells, repeated in loop-like forms until they generate a hypnotic flow. Within this structure, Graziano’s voice emerges as both a narrative and textural presence.

Among the vocal materials are Spisiga furmiga, a Bergamasque nursery rhyme connected to a childhood memory of the composer and used in the piece Sei zampe, and L’è stacc ’ol vent, a folk lullaby from the Seriana Valley: a reassuring song addressed to a little girl, inviting her to sleep peacefully, since the noise she heard was only a reed moved by the wind.

The same hypnotic quality also runs through two songs in English, which take the form of vocal vamps in the lineage of Pharoah Sanders and Don Cherry, where repetition, melody and voice converge in an open, ritual-like form.
