Description
Music for Imaginary Spaces stems from Jordan White’s long-standing interest in the specific sound of spaces, and in the idea of music that can fully exist only in a particular place. While exploring reverb design — studying old audio engineering papers, reconstructing acoustic models, and programming custom SuperCollider objects to create unusual and extreme reverbs — White developed a parallel interest in sacred music.
His transcription and analysis of vocal pieces from Byzantine, Georgian, and Armenian Orthodox Christian traditions offered a revealing point of departure: acoustic music conceived to resonate within specific architectural spaces, where voice, room, and reverberation become part of a single system. From this perspective emerged the idea of composing for places that do not exist: imaginary environments built through sound.
Recorded, recomposed, and reshaped over five sessions in 2025, Music for Imaginary Spaces is the result of several years of research and preparation. At the same time, it marks the first chapter in a new series of works in which composition, spatial imagination, and acoustic experimentation meet in constantly shifting forms.
