Description

This album presents different stances, positions on, incarnations of the spectral paradigm, as understood and played by a jazz quartet. These approaches are inspired by the work of French composers of the 1970s and 80s such as Gérard Grisey and Tristan Murail, often referred to as ‘spectralists’.

Each piece of the album takes a different point of departure towards the integration of the spectral abstractions, some following specific techniques more strictly, others relating to them in an intuitive way. Some pieces are re-foldings of others.

Throughout the album, the ideals of spectralism and jazz constantly interact and sometimes clash with each other. These ideals, or paradigms, or models, are the forces that make the musical substance coalesce into a specific shape, just like the forces that cause a protein to fold, or the elemental powers that, on a different timescale, create mountains and landscapes.
