Description
Erik Satie’s music has always invited different readings. Beneath its
apparent simplicity lie unusual harmonic choices, suspended forms,
melancholy, irony and a persistent sense of ambiguity. Rather than
treating this repertoire as something to reproduce, Danilo Gallo takes
these qualities as the starting point for a new musical environment.
Satie’s compositions provide harmonic and formal material around which
the trio can move freely. Written structures open into improvisation;
grooves give way to more spacious passages, solos and collective
interplay, while electronics occasionally extend the music into more
abstract territory. Echoes of jazz, free improvisation, funk and other
musical languages emerge without obscuring the character of the
original material.
The result is neither a conventional tribute nor a simple jazz
reinterpretation of Satie. His music becomes a field of possibilities:
something that can be stretched, displaced and reimagined while
preserving the mixture of stillness, strangeness and understated intensity
that makes it so distinctive.
