Divine Songs is an imaginative tribute to the music of Alice Coltrane and its profound richness. The quintet approaches her work with a creative and investigative spirit, seeking to retrace its poetic and subversive echoes.
Alice Coltrane was a pianist, organist, and harpist. Her music represents the ideal intersection between musical languages rooted in bebop and soul jazz and the pursuit of a freer expressiveness, intimately connected to what is known as spiritual jazz—hence her fascination with Africa and, above all, India. Her work has often been described as “ecstatic music.”
The starting point for the Divine Songs quintet in relation to Alice Coltrane’s musical journey lies in the fruitful alternation between a sense of form and the component of improvisation. Together, the quintet pays tribute to this dense music, charged with multiple meanings, through a collective voice. They give life to the ancestral song, the inner movements, and the vivid, transversal imagination of a timeless artist.
