Description
After releasing his first solo work in 2023, “7 Composizioni Improvvisate per Contrabbasso Solo” (Niafunken), the double bassist Mirco Ballabene continues his exploration of solo performance through the practice of improvisation—between fragmented and extended gestures, harmonic and inharmonic timbres, voice, wood, steel, and bow hair.
It’s an exploration aimed at bringing out the raw material of sound as it unfolds in an uninterrupted journey through the use of extended techniques and instrument preparations, from echoes of 20th-century Western tradition to a form of primitivism that places the gesture in the timeless dimension of ritual. Ultimately, it is a pursuit that retains a living, visceral relationship with sound—a relationship from which its still infinite fascinations may resonate.
