Description
BASSISM Trio stems from a strong musical affinity and a shared desire to explore the structural and timbral possibilities of an unconventional lineup, one without traditional harmonic instruments. The result is a dense, physical, and constantly evolving sound, where the interaction between low registers becomes the core of the trio’s musical language.
De Fabritiis and Popolla, who also perform together in the horn section of Roots Magic, bring to the project a shared vision rooted in the Afro-American tradition while developing a highly personal language based on deep interplay, meticulous attention to sound, and an openness to radical improvisation. The trio is completed by drummer Ferdinando Faraò, a musician with a long-established career and director of the Artchipel Orchestra, whose playing combines structural awareness with expressive freedom.
The album also features a special vocal contribution by Naima Faraò on the title track, Dreams Must Explain Themselves, adding another evocative dimension to the trio’s sonic landscape.
The title track, together with Kesh Valley Part 1 and Kesh Valley Part 2, pays tribute to the American writer Ursula K. Le Guin, whose work has been a profound source of inspiration for the project. The album title itself is taken from one of Le Guin’s statements, while the Kesh Valley pieces draw inspiration from the imaginary world she created. Kesh Valley Part 2 also incorporates a brief excerpt from one of Le Guin’s public talks, further underscoring the connection between her thought and the album’s artistic vision.
BASSISM Trio performs an original repertoire that moves fluidly between composition and improvisation, balancing moments of powerful rhythmic intensity with more spacious, atmospheric passages. The music draws on jazz as a living, evolving language, embracing risk, listening, and collective creation as its essential principles.
