Description

Led by Filippo Orefice and Mikele Montolli, this sextet explores the possibilities of an unconventional instrumental combination: saxophone, bass, drums, violin, viola and bass clarinet. The ensemble seeks to develop its own musical language through the interaction of composition and improvisation, bringing together contrasting timbres, textures and musical approaches.

The project grew out of a collaboration spanning more than twenty years between Orefice, a saxophonist and clarinettist based in Ferrara, and Montolli, an Italian bassist active in the London jazz scene since 2010. Initially conceived as a pianoless trio with drummer Enzo Zirilli, the ensemble subsequently expanded into a sextet with the addition of violinist Ying Xue, violist Alma Schili Napolitano and bass clarinettist Daniele D’Alessandro.

Bringing together musicians from jazz, classical and contemporary music backgrounds, the sextet creates a distinctive setting for the interplay between strings, reeds and rhythm section.
