Joao Vieira
Appears on:Born in Aveiro, Portugal, in 1982 and based in Barcelona since 2003, João Vieira is a drummer and composer active in the jazz and experimental music scene. He studied at the Taller de Músics and the Conservatori Superior del Liceu in Barcelona, and continued his training in New York through private lessons with John Riley, Kenny Washington, and Ari Hoenig. He has developed his own language, exploring both modern jazz and free improvisation.
He has performed in festivals and clubs in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, and England, and has collaborated with musicians such as Raynald Colom, Dani Pérez, Manel Fortià, Nicolas Cristancho, Mauro Battisti, and Ernesto Aurignac, among others.
Creator of the Velvet Raval Jam Session, he promoted a space for experimentation with original music and thematic jams of a collective and interdisciplinary nature. His interest in the intersection between disciplines has also led him to work in theater, dance, and musicals, including national and international tours.
As a composer, he has released the albums Hypnotic and A Poesia do Sal, the latter with the support of the Câmara Municipal d’Aveiro.
He currently leads several of his own projects and co-leads Cinematic, a free improvisation project inspired by cinematic language, confirming his role as an active voice within the Barcelona experimental scene.
