Marc Unternährer

Marc Unternährer, born in 1975, studied music in Lucerne, majoring in tuba. Since then, he has been a very versatile freelance musician. He has maintained an intensive exchange with Chicago musicians since his stay in 2002 in the Lucerne studio in Chicago. Other important collaborations for him were and are with Albin Brun, Ruedi Häusermann, Erika Stucky, Barry Guy, Markus Lauterburg, Simon Hari (aka King Pepe), Matto Kämpf, Gerry Hemingway, Silke Eberhard, Manuel Troller, Hans-Peter Pfammatter, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Josh Berman, Keefe Jackson, Frank Rosaly, Hans Hassler, Julian Sartorius, Ensemble Phoenix, Miriam Sturzenegger, Sebastian Strinning, ox&öl and many more; quite a few of them are documented on record- ings. He currently plays in the following bands: Le Rex, Trampeltier of Love, Looty Trio, Bub- bles and Bangs, Blue Shroud Band, Frode Gjerstad Tuba Trio and the NAH Quartet. The Mull- bau, a space for improvised music that he co-initiated, received a Lucerne Werkbeitrag as well as the “Junge Ohren-Preis” for the children’s concert series. This was followed in 2014 by the Lucerne Werkbeitrag and a residency at the Innerschweizer Atelier in Berlin. Since 2015 he has been the program director of the Stanser Musiktage. Marc Unternährer is a lecturer at the HSLU-Music as well as the Hochschule der Künste Bern. Together with Urban Mäder and Thomas Meyer he wrote “Vermittlung Freier Improvisation – Ein Kompendium”, published by Wolke Verlag in 2019. In 2020 he received the Art and Culture Award of the City of Lucerne.
