Giulio Cuppari

Giulio Cuppari, born in 2000, first encountered the guitar in his early teens through his first rock and punk bands, a musical vein that is still clearly present today in his vivid and energetic approach to the instrument. He later trained as a jazz guitarist at the Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado and then at Siena Jazz, where he developed key insights into bebop language as well as more modern contexts, extending all the way to free improvisation. For years he has been active on the Milanese and Italian music scenes through a wide range of collaborations spanning jazz, pop, ska, singer-songwriter music, and other areas. This 360-degree approach to the instrument, ranging from mainstream jazz to more informal settings and punk, is clearly reflected in his work with the trio Psoas. The group’s unusual line-up — guitar, saxophone, and drums — calls for a particularly broad and complete use of the guitar, involving the simultaneous handling of multiple melodic lines and a fully developed timbral approach across the entire range of the instrument.
