Olivier Jambois
Appears on:Olivier Jambois is a French guitarist, composer, and sound researcher whose work explores the intersection of jazz, improvisation, and experimental sound processing. His music combines instrumental performance with electronic manipulation and custom-built devices, reflecting a strong interest in the relationship between acoustic gesture and technology.
Born in Lorraine, France, he began studying music at the age of five, initially focusing on classical violin and trumpet before turning to the guitar and developing an interest in jazz and improvised music. He later studied composition with Dutch musician Christiaan de Jong and completed a degree in Jazz and Modern Music at the Conservatori Superior del Liceu in Barcelona, where he studied with Jordi Bonell and Dani Pérez.
Jambois first gained international recognition with the French trio Enchant(i)er, which received the Rezzo Jazz à Vienne award and the Jazz(s)RA award in 2011. Their debut album, released by the label Naïve, was awarded “Révélation!” by Jazz Magazine and “Découverte” by Jazz News.
His projects include ensembles such as Eclosió, Looking for the Truth, and Uscita, as well as an extensive body of solo guitar work. His solo albums explore different approaches to sound transformation: from the use of pedals and extended textures to self-built tape echo devices and real-time sound processing with Pure Data.
He has collaborated with musicians including Jim Black, Masa Kamaguchi, Ramon Prats, Albert Cirrera, Bill McHenry, Christophe Monniot, Jordi Rabascall, and Mariano Camarasa, and has performed at festivals such as Jazz à Vienne, Nancy Jazz Pulsations, D’Jazz Nevers, Barcelona Jazz Festival, and Jazz Vic.
Alongside his performing activity, Jambois teaches composition and electric guitar at ENTI-UB (Escola de Noves Tecnologies Interactives – Universitat de Barcelona), where he also conducts research in music and sound technologies closely connected to his artistic practice.
He is also the author of the French blog fais-tes-effets-guitare, dedicated to electronics and sound processing for musicians.
